Statement on the FDA s Letter to the Food Industry Regarding the Use of Novel Ingredients Statement of CSPI director of legal affairs Bruce Silverglade

Millions of Americans already eat functional foods. They routinely start their day with folate-enriched toast (to prevent birth defects and protect their hearts) washed down with calcium-fortified orange juice (to strengthen their bones).

Many companies, both large and small, are selling or developing products that could be considered to be functional foods. Some of the biggest names in the industry are involved, including Kellogg, Campbell Soup, Con Agra, Quaker Oats, and Mars.(92)

Created in 1986, to serve as a clearinghouse for information on aspartame and to defend the sweetener from attacks. Original funders included Coca-Cola, PepsiCo, Procter & Gamble, General Foods, and the NutraSweet Group. (Food Chemical News, 1/20/86, p.2)

Founded “in 1978 to work toward a safer, healthier world. ILSI is a worldwide foundation that is making a difference in public health by advancing the understanding of scientific issues related to nutrition, food safety, toxicology, and the environment.
