Potassium, the quality nutrient is essential to the health and beauty of high-value crops. With today's quality standards in fruits and vegetables, farmers cannot afford to shortchange their crops' potassium requirements. 

In practice, small fruits are well fertilized and the incidence of nutrient deficiencies, such as S, are not common. However, because of high fertilizer rates the problem of salt and Cl toxicity does arise. Small fruits can be classified for salt and Cl tolerance as follows (Zehler et al., 1981): 

Trees, vines and woody ornamental plants tend to be sensitive to Cl and high salts. Chloride and salt sensitivity can result from irrigation waters as well as from Cl and high salt indexed fertilizers. 

Tomatoes respond to K applications when soil tests are below the recommended levels with higher yields of better quality fruit that size properly, and that ship and store better.
